Q: What is the main purpose of HelpLinker?
A: HelpLinker's main purpose is to provide an easy way for
help authors to link context-sensitive help topics, created
in any help authoring tool, to runtime applications. You don't
need to deal with resource files, topic Ids, map files or
application developers, and can focus only on the content.
You yourself can be solely responsible for creation of the
help and its implementation within the application.
Q:
Why would I want to purchase HelpLinker if I already have
an authoring tool that lets me create context-sensitive help?
A: Whereas in other authoring tools the context-sensitivity
capability is just a single tool within a suite of tools,
HelpLinker is dedicated only to context-sensitivity, and as
such was created to deal with various situations, some of
which other programs cannot deal with. For example, other
tools support only applications created in Visual Basic or
Visual C. If the application (or even part of it) is created
with another program (such as Borland), you will not be able
to generate help for it. In addition, in other context-sensitive
tools the programmer must assign an ID number to each dialog
box element for which help is generated. In HelpLinker the
author is responsible for providing the ID numbers when creating
the help, thus minimizing communication with the programmer
and dependence upon him/her. The best solution is to create
your help topics with an authoring tool of your preference,
and using HelpLinker link these topics to the application.
Q:
Can I use HelpLinker if I don't have the application's source
code?
A: Yes. You'll need to purchase a special runtime engine that
we have developed for such cases. The engine will be installed
on the users' computers. For more information, contact us
at sales@helplinker.com.
Q:
How do I define elements in the application to which I want
to link the help topics?
A: HelpLinker provides you with the means to capture screen
elements in the application. You can capture almost any type
of screen element, such as command buttons, option buttons,
checkboxes, list boxes and text boxes, and link a help topic
to it. You can also capture areas that enclose a set of related
options, toolbars, menus and even an entire window.
Q:
What type of help files can I link with HelpLinker?
A: You can link either WinHelp or HTMLHelp help topics, as
you prefer.
Q:
How is the final help project distributed to end-users?
A: HelpLinker includes DLLs file that links the help file
to the application. The DLLs needs to be installed by the
software developer in the application.
